ASL Glossary: Market Correction
A market correction is defined as a downward movement of a market index that is at least 10%.
Corrections are a normal part of market cycles. They often happen after a period of strong market growth and can be caused by concerns about inflation, interest rates, global events, or economic data.
Examples:
In 2020, the S&P 500 fell over 10% in just six days due to COVID-19 concerns — a correction that quickly turned into a bear market.
In 2018, the stock market dropped more than 10% amid fears of rising interest rates and trade tensions — but recovered in the months that followed.
Why It Matters:
Market corrections can feel unsettling, but they’re common and often short-lived. Long-term investors typically ride them out by staying diversified and focused on their goals.
